Its hard supporting a lavish Lush lifestyle on a student budget. But it is do-able. After a couple of years of meticulous practice, I've finally worked out how to get more bang for your buck in Lush, leaving more money for lunch. 

Go for bubble bars instead of bath bombs

Yes, bath bombs add something great to a bath. But all they are when you're on a budget is wasted money. A £4 bubble bar can last for around 5 baths (if you don't go too crazy on the bubbles), whilst a £4 bomb can only be used once. 

If you don't like using the product one way, find another way to use it

We are all guilty of buying a product we would not have bought had we been thinking straight. And lets face it, 9 times out of 10, the sweet smells and glitter make it impossible for us to do so. I don't particularly like the shower jellies on my skin, but have found them to be great as bubble bath. A palmful of Needles and Pines actually makes better bubbles than a bubble bar. Go figure!

Buy a multi-purpose product

FUN is a student saviour. It functions as a shower gel, bubble bar and shampoo. £5 a month on one item is so much better for your overdraft than £5 every week. Right?

Ask for samples before you buy the full product

Every Lush store is full of friendly staff who actually want to help you. One of the ways they can do this is by offering you a small sample of the product. I tend to use samples for products such as face masks and body scrubs, as I never know if I'm going to be allergic to something or not. I then go back and buy the full size products that work best for me. It saves me money, and has meant that I have been able to find the products that genuinely do good for me.

Save up your tubs and grab a free face mask

If you do use pots of products on a regular basis, don't forget to wash and keep your pots. When you return five into store, you get to choose a free face mask. What a time to be alive.

Its really not as hard as it seems to cut down on your spending in Lush, whilst still satisfying the 'Lushie' inside you. But don't let this stop you from having a big spend every once in a while - uni is hard and we all need a pick me up every now and then!

I made it through my second year of uni with a very high 2:1, and boy am I grateful. It means I'm one step closer to graduating with a first class honours, and makes me eligible to apply for a place at the best journalism training course in the UK. If you're a first year about to jump ship to the 'damn, my degree actually counts now' flotilla, don't panic. Here's some things I wish I knew before the start of the year - advice that will hopefully make your year go as smoothly as possible.

The essays that you could leave until two weeks before the deadline and earn a 1st, will be worth a 2:2 in your second year.

Lecturers change their tune once you've waved goodbye to your fresher year. They want immaculate spelling and grammar, and tend to pick your argument apart to no end. But it's still totally possible to achieve good essay marks. Just start reading and writing your essays about a month before the deadline, read lots, and try your hardest to re-draft at least once. 

Don't get sucked into inter-subject politics.

Whichever degree you study, be mindful that they are all hard and require the same amount of effort and hard graft. There's nothing more demoralising than a friend casually passing comment about the futility of your essay based degree over their science degree. If you can rise about these politics, and focus on your own work, these arguments will become irrelevant and you will be a lot happier.

Societies can slip to the wayside, and that's okay.

You'll find that your commitment to your favourite society might waiver, or disappear altogether. No one will mind if you miss a few weeks because of deadlines or the need for a night in. You do you.

Early mornings are your friend.

I don't mean a 7am wake up call and a 8am study session. That's too much for anyone to handle. Getting up in the afternoon wastes so much time, and puts me in a foul mood. I found that I was much more productive when I started to study at 11am and finished at 5pm. 

Fruit not Haribo.

I've permanently damaged my digestion due to my insatiable love of Minion Tangfastics. Reach for the bananas kids, reach for the bananas. 

Get to know the people in your seminars.

They're actually pretty nice people, if you break the awkward seminar silence.

Enjoy your experience.

If second year has taught me anything, its that time really does go fast. In and amongst your studying, make time to see old friends, talk with your parents, and experience new things when you can. I only have one year left, and though I'm already excited to see where graduate life takes me, I'll always look back on uni and laugh fondly.

UK university holidays are 12-15 weeks long. But what do we tend to spend them doing? Well, nothing at all really. Yes, us students don't have the money to go out every day of the week, or pay for oodles of extravagant 'once in a lifetime' experiences - but that doesn't mean we should settle for a summer of boredom! 

"I recently came across Eventbrite, an event management website currently running a campaign to get people to GOMO (Get Out More Often)." The GOMO campaign is all about squashing our FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) this summer, by taking more opportunities both far afield and locally. This really made me think about how everyone, regardless of income and experience, can get out more often and have a great summer.

Book something spectacular

If you're anything like me, you probably prefer a quiet day at home to a busy day out. But sometimes its good to change things up a bit and do something out of the ordinary. My 20th birthday is fast approaching, and instead of a physical gift, my Mum has booked us tickets to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang the Musical. I honestly cannot remember the last time we spent some serious money and treated ourselves to a special day out, so this treat is well deserved! Maybe you too could book yourself a little treat, a concert, musical or trip abroad?

Get involved in a local event

Living in the South East of England, I'm always spoilt for choice when it comes to local events. When I was younger and to some extent now, I was constantly involved in musical events, whether it be orchestral or more modern. It was such a great thrill to perform in front of an audience and watch people enjoy your hard work. I still get involved in concerts as and when I can. So if you can give up your time for free and help pull off a great local event, do it!

Create your own event

Whilst I have no personal experience of creating my own event, I know plenty of people who do. Whether it be a small charity fundraiser, a blogger meet-up, or a summer celebration, its totally possible to organise something yourself. I'm personally terrified of all the organisation that goes into planning an event, but if the right opportunity came knocking, I would not turn it down. Eventbrite can help you set up and promote your event here.


If you would like to find national and local events to get involved in, I would suggest heading over to Eventbrite's website, where you can explore events going on locally and in all four corners of the UK. If you're feeling brave and want to create your own event, Eventbrite also have the facilities to advertise, so you get as many  visitors as possible!

GOMO this summer!

I put my blog firmly on the back burner last week, as I was neck deep in the world of journalism. Not that I'm complaining - it's probably the best thing I've done in a long time. I was lucky enough to get accepted onto a week long journalism course, that took me on a whistle stop tour of the ins and outs of print, broadcast and online journalism. By the end of the week, I'd helped produce a ten page newspaper, a 20 minute radio news show, a 25 minute TV news show and ran a live news website for the whole day. So what did I learn from my time in the journalistic bubble?

Seeing yourself on TV/hearing your voice on radio isn't that bad

I was really apprehensive about appearing on radio and TV broadcasts, purely because I'm still trying to tackle a confidence crisis. But at the end of each day, I was so proud to see my end product and didn't actually mind watching/hearing myself back. 

Treat your editing software like you would the Queen

I quickly got used to using a Mac to edit with, but it took some time to realise that editing software would only be kind to you if you were kind in return. So don't prod buttons repeatedly, work to fast or expect miracles from the software. Patience will get you the results you need.

It's impossible to escape the news, so embrace it instead

Prior to this course I did take an interest in news. But now I'm borderline obsessed with it. Every morning we would start with an editing conference, and we were expected to know news stories in depth. I was reading the news when I woke up, on my way to uni, and constantly had one eye on sky news throughout the day. I'm still doing this now, and my course has finished. I feel so much more informed on more than just Swiddleston's unfolding love story!

The news you're working on at 11am will evolve into a different story by 2pm

Whilst writing for print and online, I spent most of my time tweaking articles I had already written or updating published work. It's a journalists job to update the public no news it has not heard, so reporting on yesterday's events is a big no!

Journalism isn't as hard as you would think

Nothing about being a journalist is inaccessible. As long as you can digest news, use a computer and have a passion for reporting, you can be taught all the ins and outs. 

I had a phenomenal time this week and cannot wait to apply for a journalism MA and one day my dream job as a radio news broadcaster. One week ago, I didn't think I would ever get the opportunity to become a journalist, but this just shows that if you have a passion for something, and are willing to put in the hours, the opportunities will come your way.

I spend a lot of my time drooling over beautifully positioned flat lays and perfectly edited posts, and love to experiment with replicating the same slick look for my posts. But whilst everything I write about is honest, blogging often portrays a glamorous life where I'm out everyday, have tonnes of spare cash, and find blogging a breeze. So to any of you out there who may have a very sophisticated image of me blogging in your head, here is what my life is really like! 

If I have nothing to do that day, I will probably not get up until 9:30am and watch Neflix until it asks me if I'm still alive.

I love getting out and about, yet sometimes a day escapes me. I don't tend to blog about these days, so sometimes my posts make me seem super busy all the time. I mean, I am super busy (especially this summer), but I can still afford a few lazy days!

My flat lays are nearly all on my duvet or my desk, as my house is definitely not filled with Pintrest-worthy spots.

I live in a cosy family home, clustered with family memorabilia, laundry and our possessions. We don't own oodles of succulents, have great lighting spots, or burn candles on a regular basis. My room still looks like its inhabited by a teenager. I wouldn't change anything about my surroundings simply for the sake of a good photo.

I own a tin full of make up and a have very cluttered sideboard dedicated to my beauty bits.

If you thought I had an elaborate draw system, here's what I really use:

I'm a uni student, so copious amounts of haul posts are a no no for me.

That's why I tend to do wishlists more than hauls. Anything I do buy and go on to talk about on my blog is simply because I needed it, or it was a little treat at the end of a term.

Unless I'm very organised, I normally write a post on the days its scheduled to go up.

I do actually try and schedule all my posts on a spreadsheet with a month to view. But often I don't write them until the day and then publish them in the nick of time. 

It feels better to have cleared up a few misconceptions that some may have about me and my blog. I wanted to show you that I'm certainly not perfect, and live a very normal life. I do my very best to show this in my posts, and want to continue to do so. I really do appreciate bloggers who do manage to create a pintresty-house, can afford to finance haul posts every week, and have their admin under control. But thats simply not me right now, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

University Reading Lists Have Burnt Me Out!

I think I've read over 150 articles, book chapters and small books over the past two terms, on four topics of history. A huge reading list led to myself developing a read-because-I-have-to mentality, often skim reading and reading online summaries instead of enjoying a book. Reading became a 9-5 job for me, and after 2 4,000 word essays and 2 exams in a month, reading for pleasure became a chore.

My TBR Pile Is Out of Control!

I buy books as and when I see them, so I have a pile as tall as me to get through. I can never fully immerse myself in a read, as I'm always looking forward to the next one. But I never get to the next one, as I haven't finished the last. What a palava.

I'm Notoriously Slap Dash At Charging My Kindle!

Once an electronic has run out of juice, I don't charge it for days. I'm lazy like that. So my Kindle has been sitting on my shelf for about a month, crying out for that electric. The charger is next to it....

Gossip Girl Re-Runs and Sims 4 Have Wasted Many An Afternoon!

Chuck Bass and the gang have stolen my days away, so much so that I'm simply forgetting to read. Plus, controlling pixel people's lives is so much more exciting than your own sometimes . Ironically, my sims have probably read tonnes of books.

I'm a Busy Bee!

Volunteering has been crazy the past few days, what with important launches to staff and preview days to attend. And with the end of exams, I've actually had time to hang out with some friends. Reading hasn't got anything on ice creams on the esplanade with one of your closest friends!

What a load of excuses! But the first step to solving your problem is admitting you have one, right? I actually feel energised to go pick up a book and enjoy myself. So keep an eye out for those reviews in the coming months!

The more successful a blog becomes, the more sponsored posts it fields to its audience. Well, that seems to be the general trend anyway. In the past couple of weeks I've received a few business emails, many of which I have turned down due to paid sponsorship clauses. Most of you must think I'm absolutely mad turning down these opportunities, but they really aren't for me.

My slushie skills are poor - I will not rest till they are award winning.

Make the most out of my week intensive Journalism summer school.

I've been offered a place on a free summer school at the #1 Journalism training centre in the UK. Journalism is the dream, so I'm hoping this will give me the tools I need to successfully apply for a MA in 2017.

Visit a museum in my university town.

Museums near my university are free, but I never pay them a visit. I only have one year till I graduate, so I need to get started if I'm going to experience them all.

Get back into HIIT workouts and eat better snacks.

I really enjoy the feeling the benefits of HIIT workouts and healthy snacking, but exams have got in the way!

Enjoy my two week beach holiday with my family.

I love beach holidays, I love my family.

Finish second year with a bang - and by bang I mean by attending our Summer Ball.

I will be 20 in August, and unlike some students, I haven't done as much travelling as I would like to. But thats mainly because I don't have as much money as I would like! I've become a little bogged down with stats the past month or so, constantly wondering if my blog will take off and worrying about my posts. I'm not a big blog, so my small stats compared to others can be disheartening. But I simply want to focus on content and enjoying my hobby. And thats exactly what my summer blogging ethos will be.

Subway Lunch, £3

A lot of sources say that Subway's are inherently unhealthy. If you choose carefully, this is not the case. A 6 inch sub at lunchtime, with a drink will cost you £3-£3.40. I always make sure to say no to cheese and load my sub up with salad.

Gregs Pasta Pots, £3-£4

Sometimes I want pasta for my lunch, and Greg's pasta pots hit the spot. They're not as cheap as other options, so I tend to have these occasionally. But their Tomato and Cheese pasta is really tasty, and comes in a resealable pot so you can snack on it all at once or throughout the afternoon.

Asda Express Diner , £1-1.50 an item

Asda have introduced express cafes in some of their stores, that offer big lunch food at tiny prices. You can pick up a slice of pizza the size of your head for £1.50 and a refillable soft drink for £1. They also offer healthier options such as the £1 jacket potato with toppings, and free water. If you have one nearby, you should definitely check it out.

I'm writing this post fresh off the back of digesting the goings on at the annual NUS (National Union Of Students) Conference. 9 times out of 10, I agree with or understand the angle at which NUS members are coming from. When I do not, I accept delegates views - after all, the NUS was built on democratic foundations. However, I cannot stop myself from challenging today's outcry that the NUS should not commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

Any NUS affiliated student union can, from my understanding, recommend amendments to NUS policies. This year, the Birmingham Guild of Students put forward the idea of the NUS officially commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day. To me, this seems like a reasonable request. Many secondary schools, further education colleges, and youth organisations commemorate the day, so why shouldn't the NUS? But today I was shocked to see video footage pertaining to the dismissal of Holocaust Memorial Day by NUS delegates. 

I like to think that I'm into fashion. I mean, I'm no guru, but I like to buy a couple of choice items every season, just to brighten my wardrobe (and two dressers...) I have owned one bodysuit in my time, for  a week last spring. I bought it on a whim, in an attempt to look cool, wore it for half a day, and recycled the £5 monstrosity almost instantaneously. It simply did not suit me at all! I swore never to even glance at one again. But alas, they are back in fashion. Here's why I definitely won't be repurchasing one.

 There is never enough fabric

I'm a comfortable size 8 - 10  and don't consider myself to have trouble finding clothes that fit. But every bodysuit I have tried on barely fits, regardless of size. They are either too baggy, or far far too tight - and I do not need that.

Comfort is an afterthought

Aside from either being too tight or too baggy, I never felt totally comfortable in my bodysuit. Most come with plunging necklines that always need constant hitching up, and straps never stay in the same place. They may be made of a comfy material, but the comfort stops there!

Going to the toilet is a palava

Picture this. You've wiggled your way into a small cubicle, managed to get your large handbag through the door, and now have to wriggle your way out of your second skin. Cue jumping, wriggling, and basically stripping naked... Is it really worth it? 

The underwear debate

Everyone I speak to about this has a different answer. Wearing underwear can be uncomfortable and maybe even necessary, but its just gross without too. 

I live in England, not California, so I probably will only wear it once a year

English summertime is a beautiful yet inconsistent entity, so spending £20 on a decent bodysuit to wear on that one day that hits 25C is probably not worth it!

Every uni blogger has an opinion on the best way to revise. Every uni blogger thinks they have the answer to all your exam woes. But the truth is, no student can tell another student how to revise. We just have to work out a unique method that suits us ourselves. Today I want to share exactly how I revise for my history exams, in the hope that you may pick up a method that might work for you, or rule out the techniques that don't.

Gathering my stationery and writing a to do list is the first task for my revision session. I take about 5 minutes to write out everything I need to achieve during my allotted time frame, making sure I don't miss anything important.

History exams at my uni tend to require students to answer two essay questions in two hours. Every topic is 99% guaranteed to come up in the exam, so we are advised to revise three topics fully and one topic partially for each exam. 

 Under these exam circumstances my revision tends to go like this:

1. Listen to/watch lecture recordings and summarise lecture topic in a A3 diagram.

2. Read/re-read and make notes on key seminar readings for each topic.

3. Re-read and make notes on any readings I have done for any coursework essays I chose to write on this topic. 

4. Plan seminar questions and essay questions provided in the module handbook, in order to pull together all the information I have learnt. I do this in spider diagram form too. These plans then form the basis of my revision.

5. Highlight these plans until EVERYTHING is colourful (see picture above).

6. Repeat process for however many topics I need to revise, whilst also taking 30 mins out of each day (morning and night) to re-read and memorise existing planning sheets.

7. By the day of the exam, I have memorised each diagram, and am able to apply my knowledge to any essay question about any of the three topics.

I hope this has helped one of you guys reading this. I remember being quite daunted as a fresher, as there was very little guidance from the university on how to revise as they assumed we already knew. Please do let me know if any of this method works for you, whether you be a fresher or a panicked 2nd/3rd year!

No one needs an excuse to love stationery. But the opening of Australian stationery and homeware store Typo in the UK, has given me yet another excuse to go nuts about notebooks and cute little pen pots. Unfortunately, the student loan is dribbling away - society regards rent and bills as more important than pencil cases and colouring books - so a simple Typo wishlist will have to do!

I have a little fascination with Phrenology and its place in history, so this pencil case is everything my nerdy history self needs. Also, it looks pretty big and durable - could this be the pencil case that can hold my 5000+ highlighters??

Sometimes I just need a notebook that affirms my existence. This does just that. It can be hard to keep your sparkle from fizzing away when you've got lots to do and no time to do it in. Maybe this would make those moments just that little bit better?

I don't need another pen pot, but I need this one. It would sit perfectly on my desk! I'm sure I could find something to put in it...

Storage Crate, £25

I just have images of my beauty products looking perfect in this crate, instead of looking horribly untidy strewn across my dresser.

Pyramid Hanging Light, £12

I only have 2 plug sockets in my room, and neither of them are near my desk. This creates a bit of a problem in the evening when I'm studying and can no longer see the books in front of my face. But these hanging lights are battery powered and would solve all my lighting issues - whilst keeping with my semi-hipster/rose gold/indie theme!

Disney churn out some great movies. They also love to highlight real issues and educate those who watch them. Zootropolis is, in my opinion, the culmination of Disney's mission to spread positivity to the next generation, and those a little bit older too...

 Zootropolis follows the adventures of bunny Judy Hopps and her life as the first ever bunny police officer in the Zootropolis Police Department. In order to prove that tiny bunnies are just as good at policing as huge elephants and scary looking lions, she resolves to solve the case of a missing otter. Long story short, it turns out that the case is a lot bigger than everyone imagined and has a huge effect on the citizens of Zootropolis. Of course, like every Disney film, everything is alright in the end, but throughout the young audience is exposed to some important issues and how they can help combat them.

 What with recent terrorism attacks, anti-Islam protests, an immigration crisis, and racial tensions in the US, hard-hitting issues have been trickling through society, and will have reached the ears of many children in one way or another. They may not understand fully, but its all going on around them. Zootropolis shows the next generation that being different is totally okay, but more importantly that we should not persecute or belittle others for their beliefs and dreams. There is no us vs them message, but a belief that everyone can be united and support each other to achieve their dreams. I'm hoping that this positive message will not only affect the minds of the younger audience, but also change the older generation's sometimes jaded perceptions of equality, diversity and conflict. 

This good advice is melted into a brilliant visual feast. Zootropolis is very bright and colourful; a real treat for the eyes, with some brilliant characters, and very clever references. Shakira also has a feature length cameo, who knows why, but it makes for great end credits.

So gather up all the children you know (and disgruntled adults), grab yourself a few seats, and settle down for a spectacular visual and moral adventure.

I have a debit card. I have the remnants of this terms student loan. Paperchase has an end of season sale...

I spent some money...

But it was totally worth it for the cute little bits and pieces I found!

I am always looking for ways to hold pages in books for essays, so I picked up some beautiful London themed sticky tabs for £2. They are so teency-weency, making them absolutely perfect for highlighting quotes in library books.

I start my dissertation work soon, and that gave me an excuse to grab this A4 Nordic Exercise Book for £3. Honestly, its so funky both inside and out and reminds me a lot of my old school books. This was just something I couldn't ignore.

I've also been trying to make a more concerted effort to organise my desk area, making it a space where I can find everything I need and work comfortably. I'm hoping that the next couple of items will do just that.

I like to hide all my paper and general crap out of sight, so this A4 Calculator Stationary Box should do just the trick. It fits great inside my desk cupboard, and its really sturdy so hopefully it will last a while. Plus, this was only £3.50!

100+ Sports Team Members running across campus at 9pm wearing nothing but boxer shorts...

 I never fully got to the bottom of this one, but I think this had something to do with sport society initiations, but I'm not too sure. I will forever remember walking home through campus after a Music society rehearsal, and double taking as around 100 guys in their underwear ran past. It was November and FREEZING COLD!

The Red Bull Milkman payed us a visit...
Uni is full of publicity stunts and marketing stints, but this was definitely the strangest. Each house was told to leave a special Red Bull cardboard box by their front door overnight. When we got up the next morning, we had been given 6 free cans of Red Bull. No explanation, whatsoever.

Batman ran around the library for a good 20 minutes, followed by a mob of angry students...
I thought I was seeing things when this happened. But no, Batman was chased round the library at 11am on a Wednesday morning. He was caught by the mob, and dragged off onto another part of campus. No one ever saw him again.

Someone decorated a tree with shoes...
I think this was some sort of attempt at a Christmas tree. There were 5 or 6 pairs of shoes flung over a tree, and no one bothered to take them down. I haven't checked in a while, but I'm pretty sure they are still there today.

I learnt to ride a bike at 1am, after a heavy night out at the uni nightclub, around the university plaza...
No one batted an eyelid. They were more concerned about getting their £1.50 burger from the takeaway hatch. I was having a great time, and learnt a skill I would never forget.

I love my subject, but the peculiar things that happen on campus really do make university that little more interesting! Whats the strangest thing you've ever seen on campus?
